Neuschwanstein looks most like a fairy tale in winter, when snow settles on the forested cliffs around it and the summer crowds thin out. This full-day coach trip from Munich combines King Ludwig II's most famous castle with Linderhof, the smallest of his palaces and the only one finished in his lifetime, and a short stop in the painted village of Oberammergau. Since July 2025 both palaces belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Palaces of King Ludwig II of Bavaria.
The coach leaves Munich at 08:30 and reaches Hohenschwangau, the village below the castles, at around 10:45, with the yellow Hohenschwangau Castle, where Ludwig spent much of his childhood, and the Alpsee in view. Your timed Neuschwanstein tickets are booked in advance, which matters: the castle can only be visited on a guided tour, same-day tickets are limited, and winter hours of 10:00 to 16:00 apply from 16 October 2026 until late March. From the village it is a walk of about 30 to 40 minutes uphill, as the shuttle bus runs only when the road is free of snow and ice. Inside, castle staff lead a tour of about 30 minutes in English through the Throne Hall, the Singers' Hall and the king's private rooms, painted with scenes from the legends behind Wagner's operas.
Do not plan on the famous view from the Marienbrücke, Mary's Bridge over the Pöllat gorge. The castle administration closes access when there is ice and snow, so it is often shut in winter; your guide will show you other viewpoints on the way up and down.
After lunch in Hohenschwangau the coach drives about an hour to Linderhof in the Graswang valley. In winter the palace is open from 10:00 to 16:30 while the park buildings are closed, and a guided tour of about 25 minutes shows the Hall of Mirrors and the dining table that could be lowered to the kitchen below so the king could eat alone. The Venus Grotto stays shut from mid-October to mid-April, the fountains only play in summer, and the Moorish Kiosk is under scaffolding, with reopening planned for the 2028 season. The last stop is Oberammergau, home of the Passion Play and of houses covered in Lüftlmalerei frescoes, before you return to Munich at around 18:30.
The trip runs daily from 1 November 2026 to 27 March 2027, except 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January, when both palaces are closed, and Shrove Tuesday, 9 February 2027, when Linderhof is closed.
